Bryan S. Lee, MD, JD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery. He has been named one of the “Top 50 rising stars in ophthalmology” and was also a member of the “Top 40 under 40” in 2015. Ocular Surgery News has designated him a Premier Surgeon 300 innovator in refractive cataract surgery.
Dr. Lee graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and cum laude from Harvard Law School. He attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis on a full merit scholarship and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins, one of the top training programs in the country. He was then the only ophthalmologist selected to receive further training in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants, considered by many to be the most prestigious fellowship in the U.S.
Dr. Lee specializes in cataract surgery and both partial and full thickness cornea transplants. He is an experienced laser (LASIK and PRK) surgeon as well as a happy LASIK patient himself. Dr. Lee also performs therapeutic laser surgery, crosslinking, pterygium removal, and complex surgeries such as replacing or rescuing intraocular lenses, iris repair, and artificial iris implantation. He was one of the first surgeons in California to use the Light Adjustable Lens, beginning in 2019.
He is a leader in ophthalmology, having received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Senior Achievement Award. Dr. Lee currently serves on both the Cataract Preferred Practice Pattern and Refractive Surgery Basic and Clinical Science Course Committees. He is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s federal Government Relations Committee. He recently completed terms on AAO’s Online Education and Refractive Management Committees and represented ASCRS on the AAO Council for six years.
Dr. Lee has been a principal investigator in multiple clinical trials, has taught courses around the world, and has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He co-authored Cataracts: A Patient’s Guide to Treatment, was associate editor of the textbook Advanced IOL Fixation Techniques: Strategies for Compromised or Missing Capsular Support, and co-founded the Young Eye Surgeon Connect column in EyeWorld. Before joining Altos Eye Physicians, Dr. Lee was on the faculty at the University of Washington, where he received the Latham Vision Research Innovation Award. Other honors have included NYU’s Susruta Lecture in Ethics, the Vanguard Scholar Award, the Danforth Scholarship, the Oliver Schein and Walter J. Stark Research Grant Awards, and the Maxwell Grand Prize for Excellence in Ophthalmology. In its first such survey, the international journal The Ophthalmologist selected Dr. Lee as one of the top 40 individuals in ophthalmology under the age of 40, and he was one of the few to be selected again two years later.
Dr. Lee and his wife, Gina, have two sons and a daughter. In his spare time, Dr. Lee enjoys traveling, watching football and baseball, and reading.
